II Sambhar II


  • 1 cup Thur / Arhar Daal 
  • 2 cups chopped mixed  vegetables (beans, carrots, cauliflower, Potato, drumstick if available)
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 3-4 green chilies (slit sideways)
  • 50 gms tamarind (. Soaked  in 1 cup hot water for 15 minutes. Strain the tamarind water into another container, squeezing as much liquid as possible out of the tamarind pulp. Discard the pulp. Set the juice aside)
  • 1 tsp. cumin seeds
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 tsp. mustard seeds
  • 1tsp. Sambhar powder
  • Coriander leaves finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • Red chili powder  to taste
  • Salt to taste
Preperation :
  • Take the picked and rinsed thur daal and pressure cook with 3 cups of water and set aside when done.
  • Heat 3 tbsp. oil in a pan and add mustard and cumin seeds and allow to splatter.
  • Now add curry leaves, onions and  green chilies. Sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add all the chopped vegetables and cook them until tender.
  • Now add the cooked daal and tamarind puree to it. Add  water if required and boil on a moderate heat for 20-25 minutes.
  • Now add salt, sambhar masala & chili powder to it and mix well. Cook for another 10-15 minutes. Remove from the heat .
  • Garnish it with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with Idli, Vada, Dosa, or Rice.
