The Amazing World of Penguins...


  • Penguins are birds with black and white feathers and a funny waddle. But unlike most birds, penguins are not able to fly  in the air;

  • Penguins spend as much as 75% of their time underwater, searching for food in the ocean. When they are in the water, they dive and flap their wings. It looks just like they are flying!

  • Penguins cannot breathe underwater, though they are able to hold their breath for a long time.
  • The mother penguin lays one or two eggs in nest.  The mother and father take turns warming the eggs.  The eggs hatch in a few weeks.  Baby penguins are called chicks.
  • Penguins live only in the Southern Hemisphere and never in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • There is 17 kinds of penguins. Four kinds live only on Antarctica.
  • Penguins live in large groups called rookeries. A rookery can have thousands of penguins in it.
